Home alarm systems: How they can provide fire protection
Residential fires account for approximately $5.5 billion in annual property losses, but the risk to you and your family is even more significant. 85% of deaths related to fire take place in the home; a fire injury occurs in the home every 31 minutes; and every day 9 people die in home fires in the US.
Fire is unpredictable and deadly. Once it starts, it can quickly get a hold on the many flammable objects within your home. The fumes from burning household goods and fabrics are extremely poisonous and these, as much as the fire itself, present a real danger if you don't get out quickly.
There are many things you can do to reduce the risk of a fire beginning in your home but, if you are unlucky enough for these measures to fail, a fire alarm could save your life and your home. Battery-operated smoke alarms should be placed in strategic locations throughout the home. These should be in locations that are most likely to be the origin of the fire so that they will be activated as soon as possible after the fire begins. They should also be placed at a height because smoke rises. Be sure to check the batteries in your smoke alarms regularly to ensure that they are still active.
You can also install a fire protection system that is monitored by a security company, who will notify emergency personnel in the event of a fire. That way, you know that help is on its way to extinguish the fire and, in the worst cases, to save you and your family should you find yourselves trapped by the fire.
Every 18 seconds, a fire department responds to a fire somewhere in the United States. You can protect yourself from the damage fire can cause.
