Fire alarms and smoke alarms: Do they protect your home against fire if you are away from home?

Fire is deadly and unpredictable. It can start at any time and the damage it causes can be irreversible. Fires in the home can kill. They also destroy property that is of monetary and sentimental value. Even when you are not at home, you want to protect your property and your valuables and avoid the emotional distress caused by the ruin of your home.

Fire and smoke alarms are usually installed to save the lives of the people in the residence at the time of the fire. But fire and smoke alarms can also be effective at protecting your property when you are not at home. A fire that begins in an empty residence is likely to do a great deal more damage than in a home that is occupied because it is much more advanced by the time it is discovered. For that reason, it is a good idea to use fire and smoke alarms that are connected to a monitoring or sprinkler system so that your home will be protected while you are away.

A monitoring system will ensure that the fire services are alerted if the fire or smoke alarms in your property are activated. A sprinkler system can be installed in areas such as the kitchen in which a fire is most likely to start.

If possible, it is wise to tell a neighbor of your whereabouts so that you can be contacted in the event of this happening. The sound of the alarm will let your neighbors know that there is a problem and they can contact the fire service if necessary.

If you have a reliable alarm system, your neighbors will know that it is a real emergency if they hear it.
